Since France has long been on top of the European powerhouse core it has been therefore also on the summit of the political stage of the continent that shaped the modern-day world. The French revolution was undoubtedly one of the most important events in world history and even though the French language is not the global lingua Franca anymore, it remains as a major language and is believed to be so in the future reaching an even more relevant role due to its growing status as a second language in almost half of the African continent. France for most of its multi-millenial history dominated Europe, controlling it very directly for decades as late as the 19th century, and its power within Europe was responsible for example for the alliance of Scotland with England, and the unifications of both Germany and Italy. France also colonised half of North America, large parts of Africa (and as such drew the borders of many countries there), had a strong influence in Japan and colonised many Southeast Asian countries (Indochina). Hum, let's start by saying that Europe in Napoleon's time was ALL FRENCH! Before that, Germany was built by French: Charlemagne, England was built by french Normans and even their royalty has 99% french blood! Who else, Swizerland,Belgium, and Spain who france has taken from the Muslims! We don't forget the crusades (FRANCE started the 3 first when England and Italy were killing their people for food...at least lionheart was a man but he was gay :D)... As people said below,france gave a lot and a lot of invention more than USA gave mostly because of the difference in age (one has a more than 2000 years the others just some 150-200 maybe)
