Garfield is a vanilla, one-trick pony of a protagonist, while Jon actually experiences realistic struggles with his work, home, and sex life. Jon is much more of an enigmatic, unpredictable character that outclasses Garfield in every respect except for the fact that he doesn't deliver the punchlines.
