Pull Harder on the Strings of Your Martyr might be more popular according to the fan base, but this song is by far their best masterpiece. The musicianship in this song is stellar and might be my favorite from the band now! The James Hatfield type of vocals at the beginning with the melodic death metal vocals in the background at the beginning is a great introduction to the rest of the amazing 11 minute song. Then after the last bit of beautiful screaming, it fades off into a clean guitar part where Matt Heafy’s voice is more mellow than I’ve ever heard in any other song, and the guitar in the background is so addicting with it’s melodic harmonies. It then transitions to a beautiful blues solo and begins building up slowly until you hear the melodic screaming backing vocals kick in, and the song goes bar out of hell and explodes with a fast paced tempo and head banging vocals. Shogun is interesting. All other 10 songs on the record might have you checking to see how much time is left, giving the feeling that some drag on for too long. Shogun is nearly twice the length of the others and yet it flows so perfectly that not once do you feel it drags on. For an 11 and a half minute song, that's pretty impressive. It just builds and builds. A great example of catchy chorus that rivals all of their either catchier songs, an immense second movement complete with a bluesy country styled solo, and a fantastic build up into some of the most epic thrash soloing the band has pulled off. This is the band's crowning gem, and definitely a career highlight

Sure, Pull Harder is kinda godlike but Shogun is very obviously their best song from an artistic perspective. It may not be as catchy as Pull Harder and it is pretty long but it for sure is the song they put the most work and art in so I appreciate this song the most out of all their now 125 songs. Epic. This is the song I would slay dragons to. Great lyrics and musicianship throughout with a mellow section that's the calm before the storm. Face melting solos and a crazy headbanging bridge. My favorite song of theirs by a mile.
