I was born in St. Louis, Missouri and went to college in Virginia. Upon moving back to Missouri, it was a culture shock. I'm a black woman that was raised in a fairly diverse school district (Ladue) but was later educated at a Historically Black University. Though this is a prevalent issue, many positive things are described as "white" and negative things are described as "black" here. Many individuals do not have the privilege of having close friends or family members of other backgrounds. St. Louis is run by many white Catholic professionals and the history of slavery in the state along with the intermixing of "races" that occured on the plantation goes untalked about. Slaves were sold on the St. Louis courthouse steps and wealth disparity is common. People are "friendly" but it's usually a mask to avoid asking the hard questions or having a dialogue.

In 2015, though we have a very racist past, the world as exposed to our issues with: Mike Brown's murder by a police officer, and MIZZOU president's retirement (stemming from the football team's boycott that stemmed from racist allegations that went unacknowledged.) St. Louis is a very divided city with heavy slave labor history. Some areas seem integrated but there is still a racial undertone.

That's funny I live in Missouri.(I'm black) my wife is white. I experience racism from both Blacks for "betraying my race" and I use to find my self always trying to prove my blackness. But I'm at peace of it is what it is.And with whites it's the typical "All blacks are alike" and because of news coverage resulting in them assuming we're all thugs unless we act the way they want us to (Jump-How high mentality). Then you're the 'good' type of black person. But they're a few good people.

I live in Missouri and I'm white, there's racial undertones everywhere in Missouri, if there aren't black people around most whites will talk freely and negatively. I myself always stop them but it's clear I'm the exception not the rule.

In 2015, worldwide known race issues that occured in Missouri include: unarmed Mike Brown's murder by a police officer in Ferguson (a county of St. Louis) and MIZZOU (University of Missouri, Columbia) president Timothy Wolf's resignation following protests about unaddressed racial allegations.
