The thing that makes Rare so great is the fact that they perfect any genre they touch. Tell them to make a platformer, they give you Banjo-Kazooie. Ask them for a racer, you get Diddy Kong Racing. Fighting game? Take Killer Instinct. Say what you will about their tenure with Microsoft, that doesn't change the fact that they made the best life simulator on 360 (Viva Pinata). To be honest Rareware lost their magic when they were bought-out by Microsoft. However, under Nintendo they were unstoppable and truly original. They also had a fantastic sense of humour and never limited themselves to a particular franchise or genre. They played a vital role in the creation of the FPS genre as we know it today yet chose to branch into beat-em-ups, platformers, racing and adventure games; all of which received the highest critical acclaim.For me Rare's involvement as a developer of N64 games was their highest achievement...-Goldeneye-Banjo-Kazooie/Tooie-Perfect Dark-Blast Corps-Jet Force Jemini-Conker's Bad Fur Day-Donkey Kong 64-Diddy Kong RacingBut special mention must also be made of their SNES greats including (but not limited to)...-Donkey Kong Country (series)-Starwing/Starfox (depending on region)-Killer InstinctRareware gets my vote for 'historical' reasons.
