Mario is very likable, but he is far from being a good character. As much as I love the Mario franchise, it is lacking in every department which is why I prefer other franchises that have better, more interesting, original and complex stories and characters, such as Halo, Metal Gear, Uncharted, Legend of Zelda, Tomb Raider, Grand Theft Auto, Resident Evil, Red Dead Redemption, etc. I prefer those games, because I can actually feel a connection to the characters and the story is actually interesting and keeps me going, unlike Mario. And those game have a lot more to offer in terms of gameplay (Mario games are just way to easy to the point that I get bored within minutes).

I don't understand how he is still this loved nowadays. Mario is bland and he has no personality. There are so many characters in more recent video games that actually have charisma, an interesting personality AND a backstory. He is perfect for kids though (and that's the moment Nintendo fans insult me in the comments for having a very legitimate opinion).

Terrible character. In fact, he doesn't have charisma or personality. Now, he is iconic and I loved to play Mario games when I was a kid, but now that I have grown out of it, I realize that all he did was smile, run, jump and want to save a princess. That's it!
