I have lived in NC most of my life. I haven't heard any references to the Civil War recently or even in the last 20 years, so I'm not sure where this is coming from that a poster mentioned in a previous post. And I don't see anymore racism here than any of the other 15 states I have visited. I think there are friendly and unfriendly people in pretty much every state. Certainly there are some states where people aren't as open or welcoming as others. I can say I have lived in NJ and you couldn't pay me to live there again. People are definitely more friendly in NC than NJ. And I certainly don't see discrimination in the workplace based on where you are from. I think maybe we have more people living here from other states than people from NC. NC is a very popular place for people to relocate (Gee, I wonder why that is? :).

Can say much for the west coast but been to every state on east coast... There r some real losers to but I gotta say NC is right there on the top. I'm thinking the civil war and racism comments are politically driven.. as a whole I noticed people in the north were the most racist and southerners truly respect all people and are much more diverse. Mass sorry but you the worst!

Lived in NC for over a decade, racism is definitely still alive and well. You will also find discrimination in the work place if you are not a southerner you will be passed over for raises, and promotions. Southern folk will smile to your face and stab you in the back. They still have a problem with the war they lost.

NC is ok, but the real people are on the West side, friendly people of the Blue Ridge mountains, remember, people come down south to retire because of the traditional values, no one goes up North to retire!

I grew up in NC, and I can honestly say I am ashamed to call myself a north carolinian, everyone is judgemental towards anyone that is even the least bit different. Racism, homophobia, xenophobia, all rampant here. Basically if you're not a white christian, you are subject to constant persecution.

I've been to almost every east coast state. North Carolina wins hands down, particularly the western part of the state.

Western North Carolina is far the friendliest by far. I Have traveled all the lower 48 for 38 year's as a long haul Truck Driver.This list is not even close to being correct.I use to think Texas was friendly but South of Houston I met some of the Rudest people Yet.IOWA is not friendly. People in Minnesota or completely Not wrapped together real tite.
