Lived in Virginia all my life, and I've got to say it is a wonderful place to live, but it has some flaws. About half of the people here aren't that sociable and would like to be left alone, especially in the larger populated counties and cities, so don't expect to be making friends off the bat if you move here. I would also recommend taking a vacation to Virginia before making your finale choice. If you go to the countryside, the coastal area and the mountains, more people will probably be open for a conversation with you. There are also a lot of good, interesting and cool museums in Virginia, so if you like to see and learn more about something, you should check them out.

Virginia use to be super friendly, but it has become a new home for a lot of New Yorkers and people from other parts of the country who aren't as friendly and move here for lower taxes and cheaper housing prices. Everyone says how "friendly" Richmond is. Maybe 15 years ago. Now Richmond is just very blah and people are aloof and don't say hello to you some times even when you're walking down the street. The Shenandoah Valley by far, is the most friendly region of Virginia. The rest of the state is a mixed bag.

I moved to VA, Norfolk 2 years ago and I despise this place, people freaks me out, with the excuse of being "friendly" they are trying to get into your damn busines. You can not go to a store and just be left alone, you will aways find someone who will try to "help you" finding something, or if you are in a restaurant, your server will show up to your table 3000 times. And don't make me start talking abour the drivers grr WHY DO YOU DRIVE 25 MPH ON THE LEFT LANE WHEN THE SPEED LIMIT IS 30! ! I swear I am counting the months to get out from this miserable state!

Everywhere in Virginia is Nice except for Northern Virginia especially Fairfax County(The largest county in the state 1.1 million people) Everyone in Fairfax county and the rest of the D.C. metro area are not friendly. The "North" officially starts in Fairfax county if you are referring to a "northern" personality.
