How did pet rocks rank higher than rats? Seriously, they're my favorites. They're second only to dogs in how affectionate they are, and relatively very easy to take care of. The only thing about them that might be difficult is that you need to spend time with them every day, but they're so lovable and fun it won't be tedious. Rats are the best pets. I have had such a huge variety of animals. I love dogs, don't get me wrong. My boxer is my baby. But rats are so sweet and feisty. They are funny to watch because they amaze you with how smart they are. Each one has their own personality. I've had 7 rats now and each time one passes it completely breaks my hear. All girls except for 1 boy. People tend to freak out but I promise you, get your own rat as a baby and you will be attached. I have so many friends that have gotten a rat to feed to their shake and ended up getting rid of the snake because they became attached to the rat lol. I promise you, you will not regret owning a rat.

I currently own two rats and they are the sweetest things! When I come in the room, they run up to me in their cage and give me the cutest eyes. Rats are also ticklish and it's so adorable when you tickle them. Their cages are very expensive, but I think its definitely worth it.

They're litter trainable (they prefer it,) cheap, cost 50$ for their whole life to feed (if you buy Mazuri 25lb bags. 2.5 bags at 20$ each feed them for their average life span which is 2.5 years... I am floored at how low rats are ranked :( It's insane how many exotic and dangerous animals are on this list and they still beat ratties! I have had nine rats in my lifetime and I have never known such an affectionate, personable and engaging pet. As much as I love my dog, they require you to drop everything for a good long walk daily. Having one hour to exercise rats gives you an hour of alone time to draw, read, browse the internet and bond with your pets. Cleaning and outfitting the cage is very therapeutic for me. It's like being an interior designer! :D Mine have never had a terribly strong smell and they are great around kids. It's the kids you have to watch out for... A bit grabby... The rat-owning community is very supportive and educational. Everyone learns from each other and everyone is committed and dedicated to caring for their rats. The rat owners I have spoken to are happy to answer questions and very informative. I love my rats!

I've owned three rats, and have to say the only downside was how short-lived they are. Literally so affectionate and smart, you could spend hours playing with them, and neither one of you would be bored.Even people who are afraid of rats have come to love them after seeing our little cuties, mostly because they figured out there is nothing to BE afraid of. They have a mind-set to play with you, not terrorize and bite you.If only they lived longer~

Rats are epic. in fact I have my pet rat sitting with me her cage mate just died. so she needs to be out a lot but now she is acting sick so I can not get her another cage mate. the day that her cage mate died I cried then some one said "why are you crying about a rat. rats are dumb if it was a dog then I can see why u would cry it is just a rat." he said it in a mean way so I said " rats can sniff out bombs and they are as smart as if not smarter then a dog and I had her for almost three years and why is a dog better than a rat." then he didn't say anything after that.

I have 2 rats one of them is very playful and energetic and sometimes likes to nibble on things and the other one is very lovable and loves attention. She can sit there with me for hours and just fall asleep. I definitely recommend getting rats but they are quite hard to look after. They need a lot of attention and I would recommend for older kids and adults.

The best pet ever. I agree with all comments below. They are sweet, affectionate, attached to people and smart. They do tricks and come when called. Life span is way too short! We had three rats, each with a different personality. I would suggest getting them young so you have time to bond before they get set in their ways. Otherwise, the best pet ever.
